I paint the question I cannot stop asking: we are divine creation, a precise biological machine, and yet we live bound to the body, to need and instinct, without full awareness of what we could become.
This question is not abstract. It emerges from lived experience of having had to fight first for survival. As a Latin American immigrant, I understand from within the distance between the needs of the body and those of the spirit. My work inhabits that tension.
The human body is my language. I do not represent it; I use it. Through the figure, posture, and tension, I construct images that engage the conflict between the physical and the spiritual. Animals and natural elements operate as active forces within a symbolic system developed from experience rather than reference.
Gold leaf introduces the divine into the material: light as origin, fire as transformation, and the constant friction between spiritual value and desire.
I work primarily in oil for its ability to transform the surface through layers, density, and transparency, allowing me to build images that contain tension and change. The use of mixed media expands these possibilities when the work requires it.
I do not make images to comfort. I make images that insist on a question: how can the human being transcend the daily struggle for survival and recognize that it is not only matter, but also energy and consciousness?
My practice resonates with the spirituality of Hilma af Klint, the symbolism of Klimt, and contemporary artists such as Firelei Báez and Kehinde Wiley, who place the body at the center of the mythic and the sacred. However, my work emerges from a specific experience: that of a Latin American woman who learned first to survive, and from that place asks what it means to transcend.
Artist Statement
